Bamboleo

In 1997, Cuba held its first ever conference on the state of its recording history, "Cubadisco '97".  The idea was to showcase to the world the wave of contemporary bands brewing a fresh concoction called Nueva Salsa Cubana (New Cuban Salsa).  This new style was recently filmed by MTV Road Rules - a historical television event featuring Bamboleo and marking the first time New Cuban Salsa, or timba, reached the North American audience.  Since then, the response has been overwhelming.

"This style is strong and has given life to our music," says Lázano Valdés, founder and musical director of Bamboleo. "From the beginning, we wanted to present a wide panorama of music.  A type of dance music that takes into account our traditional roots as well as our jazz, rock, and pop influence."  The 14-piece band dazzles audiences with sounds and rhythms that are irresistible and Bamboleo set the standard for the New Cuban Salsa phenomenon.

Rolo Martinez

By age 15, Rolo Martinez was already singing with various Havanese dance bands.  Born in 1935, Rolo's career has spanned decades and he has become a legend within the Cuban dance music community.  His colleagues include many of the genre's greatest names of the 20th century, including Ernesto Duarte, Benny More, Felix Chapotin, and many others.  Fortunately, Rolo has kept on singing.  In 1998, Rolo took part in an international tour of the all-star Cubanismo! band, led by trumpeter Jesus Alemany and appeared throughout North America.  1998 also marked the release of Rolo's eagerly awaited third solo album back by the internationally renowned group Bamboleo.

"...one of the great soneros from Cuba's Golden Age of Music whose voice has remained as rich as it was back in the '50s." -Beto Arcos
