More about some of the artists featured on GLOBAL TRANSMISSIONS

Vas

Vas, the Latin world for vessel, describes how Persian-born vocalist Azam Ali and American-born percussionist Greg Ellis approach, or more precisely, receive their music.  It is indeed accurate to say their music completes them, with exquisite vocal textures artfully blending with a vast array of world rhythms and beats.  Their musical style is best described as 'alternative world,' a term the duo defines as music that transcends cultural and geographic specificity.

"...captivating and hypnotic...This is the kind of music that turns living rooms into temples."
                 - RHYTHM Magazine

Susana Baca

It is said that passion intensifies with restraint; then the beautifully cool vocals of Susana Baca over her band's deep Afro-Peruvian grooves is as emotional as it gets.  Susana Baca belongs to a new generation of Peruvian singers, delving into the shadows of the past to recover shimmering melodies and seductive rhythms.  Her seemingly effortless interpretative skills belie years of work assembling the songs, the stories and the steps of music and dances once consigned to history.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan broke barriers of language and culture with his instrument, "a voice from heaven," opening western ears to the spirituality and beauty of the centuries' old tradition of qawwali.  He became an awe-inspiring and powerful global world music force, inspiring some of this century's greatest filmmakers, including Martin Scorsese and Oliver Stone, and has been incorporated into the soundtracks for films such as Dead Man Walking and The Last Temptation of Christ.  Khan performed with music icons from all genres including Eddie Vedder, Peter Gabriel, Joan Osborne and, at the time of his death, was due to record with Bjork and Luciano Pavarotti.
