Dubbed The Madonna of the Townships, Brenda
Fassie became an icon in her native South Africa and one of the country's
most popular singers ever. From humble beginnings in the township of Langa,
Cape Town, the 19-year-old Fassie first burst into the limelight in 1983
with the hit Weekend Special which became the fastest-selling
record in South Africa. Over the next 20 years, her many hits established
Fassie as one of Africa's biggest stars ever. In 1998, Fassie released her
blockbuster album MEMEZA and was followed by a string of multi-platinum
successes. One of Africa's very biggest stars - and one of its most controversial - Fassie's fearless bisexuality and flamboyant party lifestyle challenged social mores and made headlines for much of her long and illustrious career. But her famously gutsy, unmistakable voice belied an increasing physical frailty, and after a tragically rapid downturn in her already-fragile health, Brenda Fassie died in May 2004, just before her 40th Birthday. It was a true tribute to her prominence in South African culture that visitors to her hospital bedside included Nelson Mandela, Winnie Madikizel-Mandela, and President Thabo Mbeki, among many others. the Nelson Mandela Foundation (named after the prison number Mandela was
given during his 18 years of imprisonment on Robben Island.) |
