Lila Downs LA CANTINA Biography

iTunes Live Session

“At a time when Mexico’s rich native styles are being shunned as old-fashioned or irrelevant, Lila Downs offers a fresh, modern document that joyfully reveals the rich well of inspiration.”

---Los Angeles Times

“The Mexican-American singer’s sound evokes the pulsing, vibrant rhythms of her home country’s rich folk-music legacy. But in addition to modern instrumentation and arrangements, Downs has brought a new social awareness to her repertoire of original and native Mesoamerican songs.”

---All Things Considered, National Public Radio

Latin Grammy© Winner Lila Downs’ fifth and finest record to date!  Downs won Best Folk Album at the Latin Grammy’s for her critically-acclaimed record ONE BLOOD (Una Sangre). Her stunning performance in the hit film Frida, starring Salma Hayek, boosted her profile. She also performed the Oscar-nominated track from the film alongside Caetano Veloso at the Academy Award ceremony!

Now, Lila Downs delivers an impressively unique record with La Cantina (Entre Copa y Copa). A departure from her previous songs and records, Lila focuses intently on the rich and familiar repertoire of Mexico’s beloved ranchera songs. Rancheras are ballads usually tackling heartbreak, loneliness, love and longing – songs typically sung in local cantinas throughout Mexico. Rounding out the sounds on the record is five-time Grammy winner Flaco Jimenez on accordion.
