About some of the artists featured on NIGHT GROOVES - After four decades as one of jazz's most innovative and popular piano legends, Ramsey Lewis is reminded of a Stan Kenton quote, "When you get to the top, don't forget to send the elevator back down." On URBAN KNIGHTS III, Lewis has sought to give back to the city that fostered his own creative development by assembling a band of outstanding young jazz musicians from the Chicago area. Together, they set down powerful urban and funk grooves that rock the house! "If a song is grooving, I like to groove hard," says Warren Hill. And he does just that with potent riffs and a deep, passionate sound on his new album and Narada Jazz debut, LOVE LIFE. Hill draws upon his formidable skills as both a saxophonist and composer to create a unique musical mélange of soulful jazz, hip-hop, R&B, pop, and rock. But the unmistakable sound of Hill's sax and groove binds the album's wide spectrum of emotions and styles. With guest performances by jazz powerhouses Chris Botti and Larry Carlton, LOVE LIFE sets HiIl apart as one of smooth jazz's most popular and exciting stars. Ramsey Lewis confesses APPASSIONATA is an album he's wanted to record for many years. Its title - also the name of a Beethoven sonata - expresses what he calls the "deep, sincere feeling" behind these songs, ones he's personally enjoyed over the years. "There's a certain amount of passion in the love and performance of music," says Lewis. "More than any album I've ever done, APPASSIONATA is a snapshot of all I've been involved in." Featuring classical and operatic favorites, traditional spirituals and Lewis' blue-infused jazz originals, the album is brimming with the open, yet lush, energy of the pianist's many-faceted jazz style. ALEX BUGNON...AS PROMISED is a personal response to Bugnon's fans. "I stayed on the road nearly four years, playing mainly in the U.S. and at European festivals. Every time I'd perform, people would ask when my next album would be out. I'd always say, 'I promise you, soon.' This title really speaks to those who asked and they'll know it's very personal to them." Bugnon fulfills his promise with soulful, jazz keys, revealing his tastes for R&B and funk-laced rhythm. "More than any other record I've done, this one is more complex, and more simple, at the same time. It's really, really, really funky."
