The
Narada recording debut of Dordán is a harmonious marriage of Irish
traditional and European baroque classical forms, steeped in tradition
and refined with classical sensibilities. These four women from County
Galway celebrate Christmas the Irish way - yet the music will appeal to
listeners year 'round.
Dordán reflects the wide-ranging tastes
and talents of the group's members. Mary Bergin, born in Dublin
and now living in Spiddal, is recognized as one of the world's best
tin-whistle players and also plays a variety of wooden whistles as well
as wooden flute. Kathleen Loughnane, a master harper originally
from County Tipperary, renders ancient airs and fast-paced dance numbers
with equal ease and has published a book of traditional music arranged
for the harp. Dearbhaill Standún's upbringing in the Connemara Gaeltacht
(Irish-speaking region) explains her deep insight into the great songs
and airs of the sean nós singing style; and her fiddle and viola
playing exhibit classical and traditional expertise. The group's
spokesperson, Martina Goggin, born in Limerick and living in Spiddal,
also plays percussion and guitar in the band.
