Originally played by Buddhist priests of
Japan, the sound of the bamboo shakuhachi flute resonates with history and
depth. Master Kazu Matsui brings this ancient flute to the 21st century on
exquisite, orchestral melodies. “Music is a very interesting thing," Matsui remarks. "It is a gift that we must cherish and through it, I believe, we better understand ourselves. The music on THE STONE MONKEY is my way of representing our past, our culture, and our efforts to be better human beings.” Joined by Keiko Matsui (piano) and Hajime Hyakkoku (guitar, bass, percussion, programming), Matsui juxtaposes the sounds of East and West, the ancient shakuhachi with electronic instrumentation, modern rhythms and classical inspiration.
