On URBAN KNIGHTS VI, the band turns up the funk on covers and originals for a tight, sophisticated session. My Boo, Usher’s mega-hit, is one of the album’s stand-outs. “We really wanted to record that song,” recalls Lewis. “It’s a great tune and a perfect one to adapt to the Urban Knights sound. But also, it’s a great opportunity to make a bridge to younger audiences and let them know that there’s a lot of great instrumental music out there too.” The band also re-worked the classic, Close Your Eyes And Remember, which also features a guest performance by the man who made the song famous, Ramsey Lewis. “That song is just so beautiful, we had to do it,” mentions the younger Lewis. School Days, the tune by Stanley Clarke, is another song that Lewis has wanted to include in the Urban Knights’ repertoire for some time. “It’s almost like a jazz opera — a story within the whole song. It takes a strong, uniform band to pull it off and I think we’ve got it with this group.” From the songs to its players, the Urban Knights’ story has unfolded to accommodate the changing times and music. What has remained a constant, however, is the band’s commitment to keeping their music fresh. “We want to give our listeners real jazz without forsaking our R&B roots," comments Lewis. “We keep the edginess, the grit, of more urban music and make it approachable and enjoyable to a wider audience.” |
