Meet Ananda Shankar illustrious cult
figure in the secret history of pop culture, pioneer of '60s Indo-funk,
the sitarist who jammed with Jimi Hendrix and spent a long career at the
forefront of fusion and experimentation until his untimely death in
1999. This album is dedicated to his memory.
Born to a great artistic family including famous uncle Ravi Shankar left India for the California coast in the late '60s, where his improvisations with Hendrix created a big buzz around the young sitarist. With flower power in full swing, the pop world was enamored of exotica and a debut album saw Ananda flexing his skills as composer and arranger, with astonishing covers of Light My Fire and Jumping Jack Flash. Today that LP is rare and highly prized. Shankar's rediscovery by the '90s English club scene, spearheaded by hot London DJ/ impresario/producer Sam Zaman, aka State of Bengal, led to a wildly successful UK tour, and an electrifying collaboration on this final studio recording.
