8. What is "copyright" and what does that mean for me?
Copyright, along with other intellectual property rights, is the basic legal principle that underpins all creative works and is a fundamental right of all artists. Whenever any original musical sound is recorded, it is automatically protected by copyright.

The aim of copyright is to foster creative works by creating a vibrant and dynamic climate for artists and creators to work in and to prevent unauthorized copying of original works. It guarantees that the integrity of their work is protected and ensures that the copyright holder is the prime beneficiary of any commercial exploitation of the work.

Copyright protection gives the copyright holder the exclusive legal right to reproduce, publish, distribute, perform, broadcast, translate or adapt their work – and to have the exclusive right to license others to do so - for a fixed period of time. This period varies from country to country, but for example in the case of recorded music, in Europe copyright lasts for 50 years and in the USA for 95 years.

As a legal principle, copyright is very well established. The first copyright law was passed in England in 1709 and today almost every country in the world has a copyright law. In recognition of the importance of strong copyright protection, when the World Trade Organization was formed in 1995, having a modern effective copyright law was one of the pre-conditions for countries wanting to join.

Copyright is absolutely crucial for all musicians, songwriters and other artists who wish to work by using their talent. It is automatic and applies to all creative fields. Without it, there is no way for the copyright holder to ensure that their work is seen, heard, experienced or used in the ways and with the quality intended. Without it there is no way to ensure that those who actually are responsible for creating all the wonderful art and entertainment around us are the beneficiaries of that work.

17. Does Narada have an internship program?
Yes.  Narada has established an integrated internship program designed to offer currently enrolled college students the opportunity to experience first hand how a record company works.  The Operations department coordinates the intern placement program between prospective candidates and the various departments seeking interns.

Internships range in fields of study such as Marketing, Promotion, Publicity, and many others.  Depending on the departments, duties of the intern will vary and will be outlined in your initial interview.  Duties can range from general administrative work to specifically assigned departmental projects.

Interns receive college credit for their participation, which typically lasts the length of one semester or quarter.  Usually interns are expected to contribute 10 to 15 hours per week to the program, with flexibility given to midterm and final exam weeks for extra studying time that may be needed. Narada does not pay any relocation costs, room, board, per diem, salary, nor any other compensation for its internships. Interns receive college credit for their participation.

The internship is a valuable learning experience and provides an insight into the working of not only a record company, but also the business world in general.  Such an internship, however, requires a high level of confidentiality and responsibility to the company. There are no after-internship employment guarantees, and interns who are musically oriented must abide by company procedures.

The relationship between an intern and Narada  should be a harmonious one, with both parties benefiting from the experience.  Therefore, to be properly considered, please send your inquiry, area of interest, and qualifications to:

Narada Productions
The Blue Note Label Group
150 Fifth Avenue, 6th Floor
New York, NY 10011

Attention: Internships

No phone calls please.

22. What is a good description of Narada’s music?
Primarily, Narada produces contemporary instrumental music. Many Narada recordings are designated to the "new age" sections in record stores. The term "new age" is handy, generic and fairly elusive one; generally it has come to refer to a smoother brand of contemporary music with more emphasis on melody and structure. It remains, however, eclectic in nature.

Narada defines "new age" very broadly - contemporary, structured, progressive music from around the world appreciated by sophisticated listeners. The "new age" genre in contemporary music can include a wide variety of musical styles and artists, ranging from relaxing acoustic guitar and piano, contemporary, urban, and straight-ahead jazz, ambient, experimental, avant-garde, rooted in sacred and folk traditions, and world music - including new flamenco, Celtic, Native American, Cajun, Cuban, African, Middle Eastern, Latin, and more.

-Albums may feature acoustic soloists or acoustic ensembles, crossover pop, contemporary, urban, and straight-ahead jazz, ambient or avante garde, and world music influences.

- Narada makes thematic recordings generating original musical compositions on special areas of interest  to the label and our artists.

- Vocals appear on many albums by a variety of our artists, such as Kathy Mattea, Azam Ali, Susheela Raman, Flora Purim, Sheila Chandra, Lila Downs, Kim Robertson, Dordán, and British diva Miriam Stockley.  Many of our jazz releases feature vocals from today's hottest stars such as Nancy Wilson, Joyce Cooling, and Molly Johnson.

-Narada’s Collections bring together a variety of the best music and artists oriented to a specific theme or music genre, such as Fado, Celtic or Flamenco.

Because we define "new age" in broad terms and have used broad criteria in choosing artists, you will find our label offers a tremendously diversified catalog of music and a roster of very talented artists.
